More than 1.31 lakh people were killed due to road accidents in 2020. The figure is comparatively less to 2019 when 1.51 lakh people lost their lives. The decline can partly be attributed to the numerous days of lockdown the country saw in 2020.
Data is not yet available for 2021 and 2022, but it’s anybody’s guess the figures will increase due to fewer Covid restrictions. This India Today infographic uses the Road and Transports Ministry data to look at key trends, including states with the highest number of road-accident deaths, the main causes, the most vulnerable road users.
