It was the last day at Mundelein High School when members of the student-produced newspaper were given news fit for the front page: The staff of “The Mustang” won 15 awards from the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s Newspaper & Digital Media Contest, Division 3.
“It’s really exciting to have our hard work recognized, and I’m so proud of how everyone on the staff has grown this year as writers and journalists,” Co-editor-in-chief Ashley Cline “22 said.
The staff received six staff awards, including two second place awards, one for Best Overall Design and the other for Best Front-Page Design. They took third place for Best Centerspread Story Package and three honorable mentions for Best Website (mhsmustang.com), Best Hybrid Publication and Best Overall Publication.
“It was validating to be recognized and a great end to the year as a graduated senior,” Co-editor-in-chief Tress Dorfler “22 said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the staff as a whole and can’t wait to see how they’ll continue to grow next year.”
“The 2021-22 staff was filled with talented reporters and writers, especially considering many of them were new to staff this year,” Adviser Michelle Didzbalis said. “They showed an eagerness for the journalism process that led to a lot of thoughtful and engaging stories and publications this year as proven by the awards received.”
Individual staff members received a total of nine awards listed below:
* First Place: Best Photo Story– Tress Dorfler
* Second Place: Best Photo Story– Ashley Cline
* Second Place: Best New Story– “Ukraine fears invasion as Russia amasses troops on border” by William Fisher
* Third Place: Best In-Depth News Story– “Proposed pass procedure brings concerns, complaints” by Tress Dorfler
* Third Place: Best Headline– “Just jazzy: MHS ensemble prepares for upcoming performances” by Megan Burns
* Third Place: Best Infographic on the 2022 Winter Olympics–Kayla Baltazar, Haydn Nuttall & Samantha Tolentino
* Honorable Mention: Best Single-Page Story Package– Tress Dorfler
* Honorable Mention: Best infographic on Valentine’s Day– Lucy Moran, Maggie O’Brien & Natalie Wing
* Honorable Mention: Best News or Features Photo– Ashley Cline
