The new Scandic Spectrum in Copenhagen
Insight from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 217 hotels comprising 38,513 new rooms are on track to opening in May.
Asia Pacific and Europe are set to welcome the most new hotels next month, with 73 openings planned for each of these regions.
Of the 217 hotels expected to open in May 2022, 82 properties with 15,753 rooms between them, will have five-star status while another 135, with 22,760 rooms in total, will be in the four-star category.
APAC is set to welcome 73 hotels and 14,251 rooms, Europe will welcome 73 properties with 11,460 rooms and North America will welcome 46 hotels with 8,012 new rooms. Another 12 hotels with 1,854 rooms are to open in Africa, 11 hotels with 2,520 rooms are to open in the Middle East and two hotels with 416 rooms are to open in Latin America.
The United States is the country with the most May openings, as it looks set to welcome 39 new hotels. China will benefit from 24 openings and the UK will welcome 17 new hotels. Cities seeing the biggest boost to their hotel scene are Bangkok, New York and London, each with five hotels making their debut in May.
Brands with the most openings include Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts, both with seven planned May debuts.

Significant openings within May include the Scandic Spectrum in Copenhagen and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences Amman.
The 632-room Scandic Spectrum is a landmark opening for Scandic. The property occupies a central site that places guests close to the city’s Central Station and major sites including the Tivoli Gardens and City Hall.
The glass-fronted, design-led and sustainable property will host guests and locals in contemporary spaces including a floor dedicated to restaurants, bars and a terrace providing panoramic views over the city and harbour.
The five-star Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences Amman then aims to provide a memorable experience that fuses modern luxury with a taste of Jordanian culture.
This property located at the heart of the capital comprises 228 guest rooms, including 34 suites, along with 90 branded residences and amenities including an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre, two upscale restaurants including a rooftop venue and a 1,000-sq-m boardroom.
