The Kansas Press Association announced their 2022 statewide awards on Friday, with The Hutchinson News taking 12 awards, including first place in Best Photo for General News. 
The airplane photo was taken by Sandra J. Milburn, The Hutchinson News’ senior photographer. 
In addition to the first place award, Milburn won second place for her 10-photo portfolio. 
KPA also awarded Milburn third place for her statewide Best Sports Photo of an athlete as his glasses fell off his face during a basketball game and third place for her Best Feature Photo of a shooting cowboy contest at the Kansas State Fair. 
For reporting, KPA awarded second place in Best Agricultural Journalism to Alice Mannette for her heritage animal farm story. Mannette also achieved second place for Best Education Story for her youth suicide story and third place in Best Environmental Story for her reporting on hemp fiber.

In addition, The Hutchinson News designers Karina Zaits, Mitchell Thorson and Shawn Sullivan received first place for Best Infographics. KPA also awarded The Hutchinson News design staff with second place for Best Photo Design Pages, Best Front Page and Best Sports Pages. The team also received third place in Design and Layout Excellence.
