On May 6, 2022, the first recognised case of monkeypox was confirmed in a UK individual who had travel links to Nigeria, where the disease is endemic. In just a month, the number of cases shot up by 700%.
Monkeypox has now been detected in 20 countries where the viral infection is not endemic. This is one of the biggest outbreaks of the virus outside of West Africa, where it has been endemic for years. A disease is declared endemic when it is constantly present in a region.
The cases have now been reported in the US, the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy among other countries.
It took 16 days from the first recorded case to reach the first 100 cases. In the next 16 days, the cases increased by over 7x.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as of 2 June 2022, 780 laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported to or identified by the WHO from 27 member states that are not endemic to the monkeypox virus.
“The sudden and unexpected appearance of monkeypox simultaneously in several non-endemic countries suggests that there might have been undetected transmission for some unknown duration of time followed by recent amplifier events,” the WHO states.
Currently, no cases have been confirmed in India.
The WHO has said it expects to identify more cases of monkeypox as it expands surveillance in countries where the disease is not typically found. It also said that it would provide further guidance and recommendations in the coming days for countries on how to mitigate the spread of monkeypox.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that while human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets, other methods of transmission include direct contact with body fluids or lesion material, and indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated clothing or linens.
The monkeypox cases so far have been mild, with no deaths reported. Typically, the virus causes fever, chills, rash and lesions on the face or genitals. Most people recover within several weeks without requiring hospitalisation.
