Marriott International’s luxury hotel brand will grow rapidly across APAC and Europe over the coming years, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.
The hip W Hotels brand is on the expansion trail, with our in-house research team tracking no fewer than 32 hotel projects with 7,502 keys in the works around the world.
We’ve found that APAC is the flag’s most active region overall, with 12 schemes and 3,410 rooms being lined up everywhere from China to Australia. This puts it just ahead of Europe in the development stakes, which is keenly awaiting the arrival of nine properties with 1,716 keys.
North America (five hotels), Latin America (four projects) and Africa (two properties) conclude our top five regional rankings.
Luxury hotel plans typically take several years to come to fruition, so it’s interesting to see that W Hotels is preparing to complete several developments this year as the brand continues to deliver its pre-Covid pipeline.
In total, ten W Hotels properties with 2,863 rooms will launch in the remainder of 2022. This compares to just five hotels and 787 keys in 2023, three schemes with 650 rooms in 2024, and 14 projects with 3,202 keys in 2025 and beyond.

Now let’s take a closer look at a couple of real standouts from W Hotels’ development slate, both of which are currently under construction and due to make their debuts in Q4 2022.
First up is W Edinburgh, sporting a striking golden façade crafted from a winding steel ribbon. The centrepiece of Nuveen Real Estate’s Edinburgh St James development, this 244-key property will feature architecture and interiors courtesy of Jestico + Whiles – London, with Allan Murray Architects also involved on the architectural design. Among the amenities being promised are a rooftop destination bar and outdoor terrace, a W Lounge, a signature restaurant, a Fit workout facility, an Away spa and 2,450 sq ft of event space.
Also worth highlighting is W Sydney, which will occupy a landmark waterfront building offering sweeping views across Darling Harbour. It’ll incorporate 593 guestrooms, suites and serviced apartments; a Wet Deck, a restaurant, two bars, an Away spa, a Fit gym and 925 sq m of event space. Hassell – Sydney is looking after the architecture here, while Joseph Pang Design Consultants is focusing on the interiors.
