Hyatt Regency Edinburgh Marina
The People’s Republic is providing rich pickings for Hyatt Hotels Corporation’s upper-upscale brand, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.
Figures compiled by our in-house research team indicate that Hyatt Regency has 71 projects and 18,867 rooms on its development slate around the world – including a glut of schemes in China.
The Hyatt Regency brand has a staggering 33 properties with 8,096 keys in the works across China right now – equivalent to nearly half of all its pipeline. This puts it way ahead of nearest challenger India in the country-by-country stakes, which currently has 13 hotels with 2,192 rooms on its books. Rounding out the top three is the US, courtesy of its more modest tally of seven projects and 4,157 rooms.
Given these stats, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Hyatt Regency’s most active region by far is APAC – 51 schemes with 11,960 rooms are being planned here as we speak. North America (nine hotels, 4,757 keys) and Europe (seven properties, 1,119 rooms) are a distant second and third respectively, while the Middle East (three projects, 831 keys) and Africa (one scheme, 200 rooms) complete our regional rundown.
You might be interested to learn that a lot of Hyatt Regency’s development activity will be realised this year. No fewer than 28 projects with 7,394 rooms will be delivered in 2022 – and an additional 18 schemes and 5,851 keys will follow next year.
We’ll then see a significant dropoff in completions in 2024, as just nine hotels with 1,968 rooms are due to be ready then. Looking further ahead, 16 properties and 3,654 keys will debut in 2025 and beyond.
All three of the Hyatt Regency projects that we’ve chosen to take a closer look at are currently under construction.
First up is Hyatt Regency Kuala Lumpur, a 450-room newbuild near the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre. Upon completion in Q4 2024, this state-of-the-art scheme will feature a Japanese restaurant, two bars, a market café, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre, a Regency Club, and 21,528 sq ft of flexible meeting and event space that includes an impressive 10,764 sq ft ballroom. We understand that Kengo Kuma & Associates is working on the architecture and interior design aspects of the project, while SOM – Shanghai is also involved on the architectural side.
Now let’s turn our attention to a 161-key newbuild on Turkey’s west coast that’s hoping to open in Q3 2022. Hyatt Regency Izmir Istinye Park, part of a wider mixed-use development, is being designed by Uysalkan Architects. Benefitting from an attractive location overlooking the Gulf of İzmir, it’ll incorporate a restaurant and bar, a spa, a fitness centre and 21,500 sq ft of flexible event space.
Lastly, we head up to Scotland for the latest on Hyatt Regency Edinburgh Marina. Due to launch in Q1 2022, it’ll boast 187 guestrooms, 98 apartments, a roomy 10,000 sq ft conference and banqueting centre, a spa, and a restaurant and bar. Wilson+Gunn Architects is handling both the architecture and interior design of the property, a key component of the ambitious Edinburgh Marina development.
